The Friends of the Flora Public Library, organized in March 1993, is a group of enthusiastic supporters united by a common concern for the well-being of the Flora Public Library.  Although a new group, the Friends are a devoted group that promotes the library as a cultural, educational and recreational asset to the community.

    The Friends are dedicated to:

·  Promoting literacy education and cultural opportunities to all individuals and age levels in the greater Flora area.

·  Developing an expanded awareness of library resources and services available to the community and to promote broader community support for the Flora Public Library.

·  Stimulating bequests and gifts of desirable books and related materials for the benefit of the Flora Public Library.

·  Offering volunteer opportunities to Friends of the Library.

·  Supporting adequate financial funding for the Flora Public Library.

    The Friends' efforts include:

·  Sponsoring special events.

·  Raising funds for library service improvements and supplementing the library's budget for purchasing books and other reading materials.

·  Planning programs.

   Activities:

To date, the Friends have contributed over $62,500 toward the purchase of preschool through high school level materials, adult materials, and tapes for the Dial-A-Story project.  Contributions have also provided children's programming for the Summer Reading Program and the library's annual Christmas party.

Along with fund-raising, which includes an annual book sale and membership drive, the Friends usually have a booth at the Appleknocker Festival to advertise the library.  Other activities have included a table walk, Civil War show, and doll show.
